The app creation process starts with selecting the data source of your app. You can create an app from a spreadsheet you have stored locally on your PC or use an online stored file for your app. For example, a spreadsheet from your Dropbox, SharePoint, OneDrive or Google Sheets.
For creating an app, the user sends its spreadsheet to the app creation service where it is processed by Open as App's patent-pending app creation technology. At no time during the creation process, data from these files is stored in any persisting location - whether you select a file from your PC or from your cloud.
Spreadsheet from your computer
If you decide to select an Excel file from PC, your file will not be stored in our cloud for the creation process. After you have decided on the final app layout, you can finally upload and publish your app by clicking the "Create my App" button in the last step of the creation process.
The spreadsheet is uploaded to the Microsoft Azure Europe based Open as App Cloud and cannot be accessed by third parties.
Storing your source file in the Open as App Cloud makes it possible to write data back to the spreadsheet using your mobile device. (Note: "Push to server" is available for Business Pro and Enterprise subscriptions only.)
External cloud storage providers
Open as App also integrates with a variety of third-party cloud storage providers (including Dropbox, OneDrive and Google Drive), allowing users to create apps based on files from their personal cloud.
When publishing the app, the spreadsheet is not uploaded to the Open as App cloud storage. It stays stored in the personal cloud.
The use of source files stored in your own cloud has the advantage that changes made in the Excel spreadsheet itself will be communicated directly with the app. The modified file does not need to be uploaded each time manually in the app creator. Future changes to your spreadsheet are communicated to your mobile devices by your cloud directly. This communication is never taking place via the Open as App cloud.
High security data
If you decide to retrieve data directly from your infrastructure only the initial app creation will take place in the Open as App Cloud. The source file will be encrypted and handed over to the Open as App server only during the short creation process.
The simplest way for additional security is to create your apps with dummy Excel files. After publishing an app, you can integrate the original data of your company by simply changing the URL of the source spreadsheet in the Open as App Portal. (Open the app in the portal and go to Settings > Update Spreadsheet > Edit URL.)
Open as App offers the possibility to design apps by hand and to skip all interaction with the app creation service for an application in maximum security environments.
